The Florida Keys and Key West is a bucket list trip for a lot of people. And for good reason – it’s such a special place with beautiful scenery, historic charm, gorgeous water, and plenty to do. But before booking that trip, a lot of people ask the same question:

Is Key West safe to visit?

The very short answer is… yes. Key West is generally a safe destination for travelers, but like any popular tourist destination, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to have a smooth and stress-free trip.

Crime and Safety in Key West

The term “safe” can mean something different to everyone. When I ask about safety concerns, I am generally referring to crime.

Key West is considered safer than many cities in Florida. They have a generally low crime rate and violent crime is rare. Most incidents are petty crimes. And like a lot of places popular with tourism, most common issues are theft and issues related to drinking too much.

Tips and preventive measures to stay safe crime in Key West:

  • Keep valuables secured and avoid leaving belongings unattended at the beach.
  • Walk in well-lit, busy areas if you’re out late at night.
  • Use common sense when enjoying nightlife—don’t overindulge and always know your way back to your hotel.
  • There may be a heightened risk of crime in crowded places and during popular times such as Fantasy Fest

Weather and Natural Concerns

Like I mentioned above, most people are referring to crime when they ask if a certain destination is safe. But Key West weather is worth considering.

Key West is prone to hurricanes with peak season running from June to November (typically the most active months being September and October).

If you are visiting during these months, I recommend:

  • Having travel insurance that covers weather disruptions.
  • Monitor forecasts before and during your trip.
  • Have a flexible plan in case of unexpected storms.
  • Follow the recommendations of local authorities/the City of Key West and the National Hurricane Center (for example, evacuate if it is recommended)

Day-to-day, the biggest natural “hazards” are strong sun exposure and dehydration. Key West is known for extreme heat, especially in the summer months. Always wear sunscreen,

drink plenty of water, and take breaks in the shade.

Getting Around Key West Safely

If you’re staying near Duval, most things are going to be in walking distance. Key West is a little island, but a bike, scooter, or golf cart definitely makes it easier (especially if you want to visit the beaches).

Renting a golf cart, bike, or scooter adds to the experience because not only is it practical but feeling the air in your hair is always a good time, too! But you just want to stay safe while you’re doing it.

If you are biking, having bike lights at night is not only the best way to stay safe but it’s also the law.

Key West is pedestrian friendly but traffic won’t always expect a jaywalker (especially people who are visiting and might be distracted or not used to so many pedestrians). Make sure to use the crosswalks and look both ways before you cross the road. You’d be surprised how many people forget to look both ways when they are on vacation!

Here are some more tips on staying safe in Key West:

  • Always wear a helmet if renting a scooter.
  • Stick to bike lanes where available if you’re on a bike.
  • Be mindful of traffic on busy streets like North Roosevelt Boulevard.
  • Obey the speed limits.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re going to drive from the mainland/Key Largo to Key West, you’ll encounter one of the most beautiful drives. It’s easy to get distracted, so make sure to pay attention while driving. There also tend to be some aggressive drives on the road at times.

Nightlife and Party Scene

The island of Key West is famous for its nightlife, particularly along Duval Street.

You will want to follow basic safety advice that you would anywhere else. This includes keeping your drink with you, staying aware of your surroundings, and avoiding confrontations. Traveling in groups is safer than wandering solo late at night.

Water Safety

Key West waters draw a lot of tourism for good reason. The coral reef is incredible with crystal clear water and gorgeous tropical fish. From snorkeling to boating or kayaking, the Florida Keys are paradise for water lovers.

Tips for staying safe on the water:

  • Wear a life jacket when boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding—especially for kids.
  • Be mindful of currents and tides. Even in shallow areas, currents can be surprisingly strong.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen. Not only does it protect marine life, but it also ensures you won’t end up with painful burns that cut your trip short. A wide-brimmed hat can also help protect against the sun.
  • Stay hydrated. The Florida sun is intense, and dehydration sneaks up fast when you’re out on the water.
  • Know your limits. If you’re new to snorkeling or diving, stick with a guided tour and don’t push yourself beyond your comfort zone.

Final Thoughts: Is Key West Safe to Visit?

It is important to do what makes you feel the best for your own personal comfort.

But I have good news – Key West is generally safe to visit for families, couples, and solo travelers, as long as you follow basic travel safety practices. Petty crime is minimal, violent crime is rare, and the island’s laid-back vibe makes it one of Florida’s most welcoming destinations.

Plan your trip with common sense in mind—stay hydrated, watch the weather during hurricane season, and take nightlife in stride. If you do this, and you’ll have the best time in Key West whether you’re visiting for a long trip or on one of the cruise ships.

Hopefully you’ll see that Key West is every bit as safe as it is beautiful.
