Let’s be honest – while Key West is a great place, it is NOT known as a budget destination.

And I won’t sugarcoat it – finding cheap and free things to do in Key West can be a challenge.

But it can be done and there are plenty of activities that you can do for free.

Here are some of the best free things to do in Key West, Florida:

Wander Duval Street and Surrounding Streets

Duval Street is the heartbeat of Key West, stretching from the Gulf to the Atlantic. Take a leisurely walk to soak in the eclectic mix of shops, historic architecture, and lively street scenes.

This is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Key West whether I’m taking a budget trip or not. It’s the best way to explore this fun little island!

San Carlos Institute

You’ll more than likely stumble on the San Carlos Institute while you’re wandering around Duval Street. The building itself is beautiful! It’s a multipurpose space with a museum, library, art gallery, and theater. Do note that it’s only open Thursdays through Sundays from 12-6.

The museum focuses on its history, which is pretty interesting!

The San Carlos Institute in Key West was founded in 1871 by Cuban exiles who dreamed of Cuba’s independence from Spain. Supported largely by local Cuban cigar workers, it became a hub for education, culture, and political activism.

One of its most important moments came in 1892, when Cuban patriot José Martí united the exile community there and laid the groundwork for Cuba’s War of Independence. Over the years, the San Carlos also operated as one of the first bilingual and integrated schools in the U.S.

After years of decline following the Cuban Revolution, the building was nearly lost. A preservation effort led by Miami attorney Rafael Peñalver saved and restored it. With support from the State of Florida and private donors, the San Carlos was fully renovated and reopened in 1992, exactly 100 years after Martí’s landmark speech.

Today, the Institute continues to celebrate Cuban culture and history, hosting events and welcoming visitors from around the world.

Art Galleries

There are a ton of art galleries spread all throughout the island. They range greatly from local photography to sculptures

Here are just a few to get you started:

  • Alan S. Maltz Gallery – wildlife and fine art photography including local images; located at 1210 Duval St
  • Gallery on Greene – a variety of artwork by several different artists from both Key West and Cuba; located at 606 Greene St.
  • Key West Art Center and Gallery – A wide variety of art including sculpture, ceramics, fine jewelry and fine crafts created by over 50 dedicated local artists; located at 301 Front St.
  • Guild Hall Gallery – features paintings, ceramics, photography, stained glass, sculpture, metalwork, and more by several different creators; located at 614 Duval St.
  • 7 Artists and Friends – gallery features several local artists and has jewelry, paintings, photography, and sculptures; located at 213 Simonton St.
  • Art @ 830 – a little bit of everything from jewelry to glass pieces and paintings by a number of local creators; located at 830 Caroline St.
  • Art on Duval – galleries featuring Florida based and international artists and photographers; located at 602 Duval St.
  • Key West Gallery – has over 40 international artists’ creations with a wide range of styles; located at 601 Duval St.
  • Wyland Gallery –  paintings, sculptures, and glass; located at 623 Duval St. (they also have a location in Sarasota, Florida)
  • Studios of Key West – known for contemporary art but they also have a large theatre, 4 galleries, and a rooftop terrace; located at 533 Eaton St.

Take a Self-Guided Historic Walking Tour

The Old Island Restoration Foundation created a self-guided tour of Key West that you can print out. You can wander through some of the most charming parts of Key West while learning more about the island’s history.

You can also use an app to do the tour. It’s the Key West Historic Marker Tour (it’s free).

Walk Around the Key West Historic Seaport

I absolutely love the Key West Historic Seaport. It’s totally free to walk around, but I love to grab a coffee from Cuban Coffee Queen here before I walk around. Bonus free activity: the Cuban Coffee Queen is where the famous Welcome to Key West painting is!

This spot is a harborwalk along the marina with tons of shopping and restaurants. It’s also where Shrimpboat Sound is, which is the location of one of Jimmy Buffett’s recording studios. Today, you can see mementos left for him and the building is covered in fun stickers from all over.

This is also where a lot of Key West tours leave from and even if you’re not jumping on a boat, it’s fun to watch them come and go for the day.

Turtle Cannery Museum

This is a little hidden gem in Key West that most people don’t seem to notice. You can learn all about sea turtles, their role in the environment, and how they nearly went extinct due to hunting.

The museum offers free admission, but donations are welcome. They are only open in the “cooler” months, typically November through April, because they don’t have air conditioning.

Take a Picture at the Southernmost Point Buoy

Visiting the Southernmost Buoy is one of the most popular things to do in Key West. If you’re not familiar, basically it’s a large concrete buoy that marks the most southernmost point in the continental United States.

Technically, the southernmost point is on a military base. Regardless, you’re closer to Cuba than to the Miami which is pretty cool.

The buoy was built in 1983 and it’s one of the most popular spots to visit on the island. The line to take your photo there can get pretty long, so I suggest going early in the morning or later in the evening.

Mile Marker 0

The Mile Marker 0 sign is another fun (and free!) photo opportunity in Key West.

Throughout the Overseas Highway (the highway that runs from Key West to the mainland in Miami), you’ll find locals often referring to “mile markers” instead of addresses. Key West is mile marker 0, which marks the end (or start, depending on how you look at it) of US1.

Fun fact: US1 runs all the way to the Canadian border.

Explore the Key West Cemetery

Yes, I really did list the cemetery. It has some unique headstones (such as, “I told you I was sick!” and “At least I know where he’s sleeping tonight!”) It’s also a peaceful place to reflect and learn about Key West’s diverse history.

The cemetery was washed away in the hurricane of 1846; dead bodies were scattered. The current cemetery was founded in 1847 but there are some gravestones that somehow survived the hurricane, making them older than the current cemetery.

In the historic Key West cemetery, you’ll also find a monument for the U.S.S. Main. It was blown up in the Havana Harbor in 1898, killing 260 American soldiers. 24 soldiers are buried here (along with other Veterans of the Spanish-American War) and the area is protected by a fence brought in from Washington, D.C.

If you’d like a walking tour of the cemetery, they are provided by The Historic Florida Keys Foundation twice per week. This is not free, but it’s reasonable at $15 per person. You can reserve your tour by calling 305-292-6718.

West Martello Tower & Botanical Garden

This is the ultimate hidden gem in Key West. It’s a fort from the Civil War-era surrounded by a gorgeous, lush botanical garden.

The construction on the fort began in 1863 and ended in 1873. It held troops during the Spanish American War and also held equipment during WWI and WWII.

Over the years, it became an eyesore until the Key West Garden Club took over the site. They still maintain the tropical gardens to this day.

Not only is the garden absolutely stunning, but it also overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The views are incredible.

Walk the White Street Pier

The White Street Pier is right next to the Martello Tower and Botanical Garden. It’s a large pier that extends 1,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s a great spot for fishing but also gives you incredible views.

African Cemetery at Higgs Beach

This is a memorial that marks the site of a cemetery where 294 enslaved African men, women, and children are buried. Most deaths were due to the inhumane conditions on board 3 different slave ships that were captured by the Navy in 1860.

Despite receiving food and shelter, many died and were buried near Higgs Beach. However, no one knows the exact location because, while documented, the exact location was lost over the years. In 2002, a radar survey found evidence of shallow graves near the beach and also more inland. They were left undisturbed and development is prohibited.

This memorial honors their lives.

Truman Waterfront Park

This area is absolutely stunning. It’s a half-mile stretch of waterfront right close to the Truman Little White House.

It’s a gorgeous area just to walk around or catch the sunset, but if you have kids, you’ll really appreciate it. They have shaded playgrounds and a splash pad.

This is also where the Coffee Butler Amphitheater is located. They have both paid and free events here, including some really amazing concerts and festivals.

Also next to the the Truman Waterfront Park is the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ingham Maritime Museum & National Historic Landmark. Just seeing it is really cool because it’s a retired ship, so it’s massive! You can go inside, but to do so isn’t free (It’s $15 for adults; $5 for kids 7-12).

Visit the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center

The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is in the Truman Waterfront Park. You can learn about the ecosystems that exist in the Florida Keys and there exhibits as well. My favorites are the huge reef aquarium and the exhibit on the shipwrecks that have happened in the area.

They are open from 9 am-4pm Wednesday through Saturday and if you’re driving, they have free parking which is a pretty big deal in Key West.

Animal Farm at Monroe County Sheriffs Office

Yep, it’s a farm at the jail! The farm was established in 1994. The detention center was built to endure a category 5 hurricane and they decided to take in homeless animals to make the most use of the space.

You can see an alpaca, a pig, a sloth, a lemur, a bull, and more.

The farm is open the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 1-3 pm.

The Key West Wildlife Center

The Key West Wildlife Center takes in and rehabilitates injured birds. It’s not a large area, but it’s a nice place to visit.

The birds are always changing as they release them back to the wild when they can but you might see hawks, pelicans, osprey, heron, egrets, and more.

They also have chickens. If locals have a nuisance chicken, they can borrow a trap from the center to capture it then bring it to them. They’re then taken to farms where they’re used for their eggs and help eating bugs.

There is also a nature trail, two aviaries, and a freshwater pond.

The Key West Wildlife Center is located inside the seven acre Indigenous Park at 1801 White Street in Key West Florida.

Key West Nature Preserve

The Key West Nature Preserve isn’t very big. It’s a little spot with natural beauty tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Key West. There is a quarter mile trail to an undeveloped beach. You’ll walk through the mangroves to get there.

Go to the Beach

Higgs Beach has picnic areas and a fishing pier

Smathers Beach is the most popular beach with a long shoreline and plenty of rentals (including jet ski rentals)

South Beach is small but beautiful located at the very end of Duval Street.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park Beach is not free ($6 per vehicle), but reasonably priced. It’s my favorite beach in Key West, has good snorkeling, and there is an old fort you can visit as well.

Key West First Legal Rum Distillery

You can get a free tour here, which includes samples of some of their rum. You’ll learn about the distilling process, which is really interesting! This distillery itself is really cool because it’s located in an old Coca Cola bottling plant.

Listen to Live Music

Listening to live music in Key West is something you’ll do without even trying. There is live music all over the island all the time. Wander around until you find live music that calls your name!

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

Every evening, locals and visitors gather at Mallory Square to witness the breathtaking sunset.

There is a nightly sunset celebration with street performers, musicians, and local artisans. It’s a lively, fun atmosphere that’s quintessentially Key West.
