Wondering about a Florida Keys babymoon? I think anywhere you choose in the Keys is perfect, it just depends on what you’re looking for. I would genuinely go anywhere in the Keys for my babymoon happily (and, to be honest, I have).

But if I had to choose, Islamorada is my idea of an ideal destination for a babymoon.

First, it’s the ultimate tropical paradise. You’ll be literally on an island surrounded by some of the most beautiful turquoise waters you’ve ever seen, warm weather, and plenty of palm trees.

It’s a laid back, sleepy island. It’s much more quiet and laid back than Key West. There are resorts so nice you won’t ever want to leave them. And yet, there are plenty of activities, especially if you like the water. Which… you probably do, otherwise you wouldn’t be coming to an island for your babymoon!

Best Islamorada Babymoon Resorts

First, you’ll probably want to figure out where to stay. In my opinion, Islamorada offers some of the best resorts in the Florida Keys for a babymoon or romantic getaway.

Each of these resorts is stunning and has so much to do that you really don’t have to leave if you don’t want to.

Several resorts are ideal:

  • Casa Morada: This is an intimate boutique resort. To be honest, I’ve really never stayed anywhere quite like this place. While it’s waterfront, there’s really no beach, which can be a downside, but they have a very nice pool. It’s also adults-only. There are less on-site dining options than some of the other places to stay, but it is walking distance to Loralei’s (one of the best Islamorada restaurants). The resort also has bikes that are free to borrow during your stay.
  • Cheeca Lodge and Spa: This is considered to be more of a luxury hotel. They have rooms here with tubs on the balcony with ocean views – it really doesn’t get much better than that! They also have plenty of on-site restaurants, a golf course, and an on-site spa. The golf course and spa are an additional charge. Finally, the resort has a shuttle that will take you within a couple of miles of the resort or you can borrow bikes during your stay.
  • Islander Resort: Absolutely gorgeous spot right on the water with multiple pools and an on site restaurant. I also think this is a great resort for families, so if you’re doing a family babymoon, this is a great option.

Babymoon Activities in Islamorada

Here are some of the best things to do in Islamorada for a memorable babymoon experience:

  • Sunset cruise: Islamorada is a perfect place to get out on the water if you can and sunset cruises are a great romantic option
  • Go snorkeling and to a sandbar: This is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Islamorada. The sandbar is very close to shore (you can actually see it from shore) in case you are nervous about being out on the water. And snorkeling in Islamorada is absolutely unreal thanks to the generally calm waters and coral reefs.
  • Feed the Tarpon at Robbie’s: Robbie’s is a cool little area – there is a marina where many boat charters leave out of, you can rent kayaks, and there is a restaurant. But what Robbie’s is most famous for is feeding the tarpon. If you’ve never seen one, they are huge! You’ll hold a smaller fish over the edge of a pier while they jump out of the water to eat the fish right out of your hand! It’s a budget-friendly, unique experience.
  • Rain Barrel Village: A kitschy stop with art galleries, local souvenirs, and the iconic giant lobster “Betsy”. This is a must-stop at least once in your life – we go all of the time.
  • Islamorada is also known as the sport fishing capital of the world, so there are plenty of fishing opportunities if you’d like to take a fishing charter.
  • Don’t forget to get some key lime pie!
  • Relax: Embrace island time and relax at your resort – enjoy the pool or the beach if there is one. There are some absolutely incredible resorts in Islamorada!

These are my favorite activities for a babymoon in Islamorada, but if you want more ideas, here is my ultimate list of things to do in Islamorada!

Restaurants

Even though Islamorada is a quiet island town, there are plenty of restaurants (including plenty of waterfront restaurants!) You’ll find casual beach bars (with mocktails, of course) as well as more upscale options. These are my top choices for restaurants in Islamorada:

  • Cafe Moka is the best spot for good coffee! I also highly recommend an almond croissant.
  • Lorelei Cabana Bar & Restaurant: One of the most popular restaurants in Islamorada for good reason. Known for its nightly sunset celebration with live music and waterfront vibes. They also serve great mocktails.
  • Lazy Days: A laid back spot right on the water, often with live music. Plenty of (cooked) fresh seafood options as well as pastas, salads, steaks, chicken, and sandwiches.
  • Pierre’s at Morada Bay: One of the best places for a romantic, upscale spot famed for its veranda dining and sea breezes. Morada Bay (in the same location) is more laid back if you still want the views without an upscale dinner.
  • Ziggie and Mad Dog’s: Another fine dining restaurant with large portions. They are known for the best steak in the Florida Keys but also have good seafood. They are also famous for their homemade garlic herb butter for very good reason. You’ll want to make reservations if you want to eat here.

A Few Planning Tips

Islamorada is in the upper Florida Keys, just past Key Largo and under 2 hours from the Miami International Airport. Because of this, you ideally need a rental car to get from the airport to Islamorada.

I prefer to travel in the second trimester. This is personal preference, but I tend to be sick in the first trimester. In the third trimester, I am more tired and uncomfortable. The second trimester, I usually have more energy and feel really good. But with that being said, I’ve traveled during basically every stage of pregnancy and have been completely fine. This is not medical advice, and I recommend you check with your doctor before making any big travel plans, especially if you will have a long flight.

Do note that while I personally think the Florida Keys are home to some beautiful beaches that they are not the long stretches of white sand beaches you might expect from an island. The beaches in the Florida Keys (including Islamorada) often have coral on them. This kind of feels like stepping on little rocks. It’s also common for seagrass to wash up on the shore. I’m only sharing this so that you have reasonable expectations. I still find the beaches to be absolutely incredible and it doesn’t really bother me.

Islamorada is in a perfect location for traveling to some of the other Keys if you want to. It’s just a short drive to Key Largo and Marathon. There is plenty to do to keep you busy in Islamorada, so whether or not you want to do this will be up to personal preference.

If you’re there for a long weekend, I recommend soaking up Islamorada and experiencing all you can there then coming back if you want to explore more. But if you’re there longer, you might want to venture out more.

Final Thoughts

I know I’m biased because it’s one of my favorite places in the world, but it really is a perfect location for a babymoon.

You have a little adventure if you want to – charter a boat or a rent a kayak – or you can completely relax and enjoy the palm trees and stunning views. Enjoy amazing restaurants and a romantic setting with water views everywhere you look.

The laid back vibe you’ll find on the island will give you tons of quality time together and an unforgettable experience together. Hopefully this helped you plan an amazing last trip together before your bundle of joy arrives!
